History of Milton

Milton was established in 1672 by English colonists. With the town situated just above the Broadkill River, it was the perfect location for a thriving shipbuilding industry. It was known by several names over the years; however, it was finally named Milton in 1807 after an English poet by the name of John Milton.

At this time, Milton consisted of nothing more than a shipyard, four stores, seven granaries and a few tanyards.
